Our Rich History
Houghton Nursery School isn’t just another nursery school, it’s an institution.
Founded in 1946 as an addition to Houghton Primary School, we later moved to our own premises in 1968 on Wolfgang Street, Norwood, where we still stand 53 years later.
We made history in 1987 when we became the first Nursery School in South Africa to become multiracial. The process started in 1985, and our retired Principal Jennifer Soicher fought tooth and nail to be part of changing history and making sure that our school was open to every child, because we have never seen colour, we see children, and we believe every child is special.

1. Are children still required to wear masks?
All children must still wear masks as per legislation
2. Can my child attend part time? Two or three days a week?
All children are enrolled full time at the school, which means Monday to Friday 07:00 – 13:00, and some of these children stay for aftercare and would go home at 17:30.
3. I have a full time job, can my child be enrolled for full day?
Houghton Nursery School offers both half-day and full-day options
4. We are Halaal, are there food options for my child?
Houghton Nursery School has both Halaal and Kosher meal options
5. Do you provide nappies?
We do not offer nappies to parents, if your child is still in nappies you need to provide us with these regularly
